Contract: Freelance 

Fee: £2000    

Hours:  25 days total, including live festival dates (July – November 2019)

Job description

Visual Arts Plymouth are seeking an early career artist/organiser to work closely with the PAW Festival Coordinators Flock South West, to facilitate the development, delivery and evaluation of PAW in 2019. 

This role is a chance to gain experience of many practical and administrative aspects of producing an event of this scale under the guidance of Flock. Tasks are likely to include: email correspondence with organisers and venues; collating artist, organiser and audience information; practical on site assistance with artist’s install and/or audience interaction; supporting the festival’s volunteer team. 

The successful candidate will be proactive and personable, with strong literacy skills and the ability to balance an enthusiastic approach with high levels of accuracy and efficiency. 

You will need to be flexible and adaptable in terms of your approach to working, and be comfortable with lone and home working. You may need to be able to attend occasional meetings in Plymouth and be available to be on site in Plymouth during festival dates. It will be possible for some meetings to be held over skype. 

Personal Specifications

Essential Desirable
Strong computer skills including the use of Google Mail & Google Drive Knowledge of the visual arts sector in Plymouth and the South West
Strong written English, including spelling and grammar Geographical and cultural knowledge of the City of Plymouth
An interest in contemporary visual art Experience of working on arts events 
Educated to degree level
Experience of using WordPress or other website/blogging platforms

The group of 15 VAP activators bring a huge amount of knowledge, experience and ideas together to raise the profile and promote the diverse range of arts activity happening in Plymouth.

About the Plymouth Art Weekender

PAW 2019 is a 3 day event taking place from the 27th to 29th of September 2019 celebrating the visual arts and culture across the city, providing a free non-selective platform for artist led activity by offering marketing, advice and professional workshops.

PAW 2019 will also feature key commissions, supported by the Arts Council England.  

PAW aims to:

  • host an annual event that is a fixture in the cultural calendar of the city and enjoyed equally by residents and visitors to Plymouth 
  • increase cultural visitor numbers to Plymouth by promoting the city as a contemporary art hotspot where the visual arts are intertwined into the city and its diverse communities
  • enhance and nurture talent development for local and regional artists and creative practitioners
  • engage both cultural and non-cultural audiences through citywide visual arts and public art programming
  • strengthen relationships between cultural organisations, artists and communities across the city
