Kate is an artist who works with sound, film, animation and drawing to build speculative narratives which focus on our troubled times of human-caused climate and environmental catastrophe. She has been commissioned by Activate Arts, the National Trust and Craftspace among others and has received Arts Council funding for numerous projects. Kate is currently undertaking a practice-based PhD at Plymouth University and is also co-founder of Smooth Space, an artist-led collective and peer support network which has initiated residencies in public places in partnership with a number of organisations nationally.
Q & A with Kate
What do you love about showing and/or making work in Plymouth?
I love the amazing amount of energy and support in Plymouth for anyone with a creative practice who wants to get involved. There is such a fantastic, positive vibe which encourages and enables a DIY approach – really heartening in our harsh, economic times!
What can you tell us about this project, and why is now a good time to share it?
I’ll be showing some experimental projection + sound work in a fantastic space at Cawfee on Union Street. I was very lucky to be awarded funding for 12 months research and development during the past year and this has given me time and space to really focus on my art practice and PAW comes at just the right time for me to test some of my outcomes.
What are you excited to see at this year’s PAW, and why?
There’s so much great stuff to see this year, but top of my list would be – Imperfect Cinema, Karen Abadie’s Flesh [Wound] at Under; Laura Denning’s Go Rewild Yourself and Olivia Jones’ Have you Heard Plymouth? and WestfordNeedles’ Wayne’s War of the Worlds!
