Who Are You And What Do You Want? Jock Mooney
JOCK MOONEY, WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU WANT?
Ocean Studios & Gallery, Royal William Yard, The Factory Cooperage, Plymouth PL1 3QQ
In ‘Who Are You & What Do You Want’, Jock Mooney presents a vivid and playful medley of work. Comprising mainly of sculpture, the show also contains drawings, fabric design, and audio work.
Inspired in part by the vibrant culture of Mexico, circular pom-poms are woven throughout the colourful exhibition and invite the viewer in. Some function as a cushion for Mooney’s sculptures, which appear initially as a pretty array of appetising cakes and biscuits. Come a little closer, however, and discover beautifully grotesque imagery – from the guillotined head of Marie Antoinette to Janus cats, named after the Roman God who could see both past and future.
Similarly, Mooney’s drawings teem with imagery which, with their landscapes of isolation and loss, are unapologetically personal. With incredible detail and playful contrasts, ‘Who Are You & What Do You Want’ promises to be an exhibition you will not want to miss.
