Close and Remote film screenings and talk
21 Elm Road, Mannamead, PL4 7AX

Close and Remote are artists Sophie Mellor and Simon Poulter. They have an ongoing practice that responds to history as a dynamic form of representation. They like to work with the everyday, marginal or peripheral as starting points. The artworks are often formed from intensive periods of engagement with people and places, with a process of multiple points of view using a variety of cameras and sound equipment. The most recent work uses a 3xHD format creating an ultra wide point of view.
For Plymouth Art Weekender they will present recent films from commissioned work throughout the UK. The films include ‘Zone’ developed on The Wirral, commissioned by FACT and Mersey Forest; ‘Lost Characters’ commissioned by Sefton Borough Council; and ‘We Are What We Are’ commissioned by Creative Barking and Dagenham. The films will be screened between 1pm-3pm and the artists will give a talk about their work at 3pm. This will include discussion about their most recent commission ‘Life Chances’, developed in Bristol and Cardiff – a co-authored novel and jewellery business imagining the future impact of current benefit and regulatory systems.
