My name is Kitty and I’m a 15 year old illustrator and blogger.  I’ve been writing on my blog about local events and exhibitions for about a year and over that time I have discovered that Plymouth has a booming art scene.  I noticed that there were several artist’s groups and collectives around the city but none of them were for younger artists, although I kept meeting local young artists at events and found more through Instagram.  I spoke to a few of them about an idea I had to start our own group and they were enthusiastic about it, and out of that we formed YEA Plymouth, which stands for “Young Emerging Artists”.

Our main goals for YEA Plymouth are for us to come together as a group for regular meet ups and workshops, to become really active members of the Plymouth art scene, to be more involved in contributing to the arts here, and to have more of a voice in public arts.  Our group is independent (not affiliated to a school or college) which means that we can make our own decisions and set our own priorities, and that we can work with different organisations on projects as we want to.

We have in our membership young illustrators, gamemakers, photographers, zinesters, and writers, and we are open to any young people aged between 11 and 19 who are serious about art and making.  We want to support each other’s work and form collaborations to explore and experiment with new creative areas and forms.  We hope that older artists and other organisations will support us with mentoring and by working with us on collaborative art projects.

Plymouth Art Weekender 2017 is an important event for us as we will be taking part by publishing and distributing a zine about local young artists.  We will also be hosting a table at the Athenaeum where people can meet us and learn about our work, and we hope that PAW will help us to find even more creative young people to join our membership.  If you are a young artist in Plymouth or want to work with us please get in touch via our website and please come along and meet us at PAW in September!
