Event Details

For Plymouth Art Weekender 2017 the benches of Armada Way will be filled with waves of readers, reading stories for the city, stories from the sea. Readings begin at 3pm and you are invited to join any of the readers to listen to some or all of their reading.

The Park Bench Reader began in the rain, in the quiet of a Sunday afternoon, a man, sat alone, on a park bench, reading aloud from an Orwell novel in 2007.

The Park Bench Reader emerged from a few obsessions of mine, and their collision during some research I was undertaking into reading. At the time I was reading, books mainly, but also reading about ideas around bibliotherapy: the idea that reading aloud from classic works of literature could function as an act of healing. On another page I was reading about the park bench, this strange hangover from a more sociable society, from the excitement of leisure time that was created by the invention of industrialised labour in Victorian England. The novel and the park bench both flourished in the 1800’s, but in this digitized age of ever advancing download times, upload times, flight times, delivery times, clocking-on-not-clocking-off-times, screen times, facetimes, instagrams and twitter storms, reading novels can be seen as a form of protest, a quiet pushing back into a world where the words only sink in one at a time, into a slow accumulation, into a different vision of the world.
