The Last Spectator

This exhibition of painting and sculpture looks at the idea of reinventing buildings and places that are no longer used. The Point to Point spectator stand in Buckfastleigh, Devon, has been abandoned for many years, yet even in its state of atrophy retains a strong presence. Its physical disintegration reflects its demise in the consciousness and memory of the people that live here, and also describes how we often remember a place; in parts rather than in its entirety.

I never saw this strange dwelling again. Indeed as I see it now, the way it appeared to my child’s eye, it is not a building, but is quite dissolved and distributed inside me; here one room, there another, and here a bit of corridor which, however, does not connect the two rooms but is conserved in me in fragmentary form. Thus the whole thing is scattered about inside me, the rooms and the stairs that descended with such ceremonious slowness.
