Sketch 2017 has been selected from an international submission of over 500 Sketchbooks. We are delighted to announce the shortlisted prize-winners representing the 100 Sketchbooks to be exhibited in SKETCH2017, touring to Plymouth College of Art from Rabley Drawing Centre, Wiltshire and Black Swan Arts, Frome.
The competition and touring exhibition SKETCH, aims to promote the diversity and importance of drawing and the role of the sketchbook in contemporary creative practice.
SKETCH is not intended to be a survey of the sketchbook, but a to generate creative impetus and provide a forum for debate. The sketchbook is a place for impossible experiments alongside the ordinary and the observed. Viewing them can be a journey through the most intimate studio space of the artist.
“The handling of a sketchbook takes us to the heart of the space inhabited by the artist – The turning of a page brings a flow of ideas: fragments of images to come, references to places visited, experiences absorbed and thoughts provoked. It is a unique and privileged position, the prospect excites and the time spent rewards.” Meryl Setchel Ainslie
In 2005, Meryl Ainslie, founder and director of Rabley Drawing Centre in Wiltshire launched the SKETCH Open Sketchbook Drawing Prize. SKETCH is the UK’s only art prize for artist’s sketchbooks with a dedicated touring sketchbook exhibition. Plymouth College of Art are delighted to be working with Rabley Drawing Centre and hosting the show again, this year during the Plymouth Arts Weekender, and to be offering the Student Residency Prize.
We would like to thank our panel of Judges – Tom Hammick, painter and printer; Peter Randell-Page RA, sculptor; Gill Saunders, Senior Curator (Prints), Word & Image Dept, V&A Museum; our generous sponsors and all the artists who submitted this year.
Exhibition runs 22/23/24 September and continues after the Weekender
