This theatre production is based on the serpents that live in the mythological realms of the underworld. Uniting performance and potential improvisational ‘Mobility Theory’ with ‘Critical Spatial Imagination’. In February 1975 hibernating snakes came out of their holes freezing to death on the snowy surface near the Chinese metropolis Haicheng. Thus helping in the evacuation of one million people just in time. An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 struck the city a few days later.
Scientists are finding out that accumulating tectonic tensions cause a current of electric charges in the rocks due to piezoelectric effects. Pre-earthquake signals have been widely reported, including perturbations in the ionosphere. They rise and can be detected by mathematical algorithms from ground-based GPS networks. Accumulating tectonic tensions cause a current of electric charges in the rocks which trigger an ‘early-warning’ signal in SNAKES. Serpent Theatre will be performing as a site-specific production based on this.
To engage the audience metaphorically ‘Waking’ them from their social slumber. Cafes, restaurants and the street will be some of the alternative theatre venues and enacting ‘with’ the customers and passers-by will break down the ‘Fourth Wall’ sharing the action’s Real –World (non-theatrical) setting in an improvisational way.
