Event Details

A gazebo becomes a compact viewing arena for paint/print/drawings produced following a short visit to the ‘Jungle’ camp, Calais as kitchen volunteer. Initiated by a profound impression of life there, they are based on a few photographs and indelible experiences lingering in mind.

These works are on paper, of earth pigments. A few have a surface layer of mica that gleams in certain lights, perhaps offering another dimension to their interpretation. They aren’t purely documentary representations of the camp, but overlap with other trains of thought and bodies of work currently underway. The background landscape, of Northern France, is historically the muddy site of much past conflict. Some images are reflections on the nature of transient, organic and inventive shelters recently constructed and destroyed that might be seen as metaphors for the temporary nature of life itself. But primarily, this is an attempt to convey the overwhelming sense of goodwill, hope and community that prevailed there; solidarity between volunteers and refugees from across the globe to provide daily needs and essential moral support.

The emergency is ongoing. 50% of funds from sale of any work will go directly towards refugee support where needed most, with some also towards RNLI, Plymouth.
