Event Details

These are selected works from a series of aerial or elevated views of seemingly unrelated places, some of which are more remote in time or distance than others. They are about yearning for inaccessible lands that might exist but are too far away to reach, too hostile to live on, or blocked by obstacles that are difficult or impossible to overcome. Some may represent once familiar locations that through the passage of time have become sealed and inaccessible worlds, or surroundings that can never be experienced as they’re not real or are hostile to human life. The landscapes are all imaginary on some level. As destinations, they may be mirages that dissolve or disappoint on arrival, or conversely, new worlds that can thrill and enchant. As essential optimists we tend to hope eternally for the latter. Sometimes we reach that ground, but it‘s actuality can never be predicted.

Paintings are made with earth pigments from various locations, from lapis lazulae to Devon red on paper.

This exhibition is related to On the Ground, an event that will be taking place concurrently in a tent near the green at Royal William Yard.

Exhibition runs 23rd-24th September
