Clare Thornton, Victoria Walters, Jamie House
Presenting new works developed during their AA2A placements at Plymouth University, the exhibiting artists employ diverse media and materials to explore their individual concerns, clustered here under the exhibition title “Edge of Collapse”.
Clare Thornton applies pressure to an abiding interest in materiality and the body. Manipulating materials, in this instance clay and leather, she creates installations that examine things teetering on the edge. Teasing, testing materials through a series of processes that result in sculptural forms both seductive yet slightly unsettling.
Victoria Walters creates installation work that engages with the rhetoric of protection and emergency, particularly in the context of climate change. Often using organic and soft materials, the work addresses the power contexts underpinning these discourses.
Jamie House’s practice involves using an electrical drawing machine he designed. The machine replicates the culminate electrical charge a person undergoes undergoing treatment for severe depression through Electroconvulsive therapy (E.C.T).
