Event Details

The Minster Church of St Andrew has created an original and exciting work of art for the people of Plymouth. Located in the centre of the city, near the entrance to St Andrew’s Minster Church, the sculpture celebrates the historic bond between Plymouth and the minster, which has stood at the heart of our community for more than a thousand years.

A life-size, bronze figure of St Andrew is portrayed casting a net across two ancient pillars, providing an arch and gateway between the city and the minster, and reflecting the Apostle Andrew’s role as a ‘fisher of men’.

The artist was the experienced sculptor Rodney Munday, who has a considerable reputation for his work in the human form. His sculpture is innovative and reflects the best artistic practice of the day, providing a long lasting legacy for the people of Plymouth.

The design commemorates the resurgence from the ashes of the city and the minster following the blitz of the Second World War, when Plymouth was ripped apart by enemy bombing and so many lives were lost.

The talk will describe the process used by the church to achieve the creation of this iconic work of art.
